My portion

"Whom have I in heaven but you?

And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever" Psalm 73:25-26 (NIV)

In this season of Lent (or any time of fasting), it can be easy to become focused on rules and restrictions. You start to crave the very thing that you're giving up, which can cause you to lose focus. However, Psalm 73 puts it all into perspective.

When I think of the word "portion," I immediately think of food. A portion is an allotment, a serving, it's all that you need to be satisfied, it is ENOUGH. God wants to be our portion. He wants us to be so consumed with Him that we no longer focus on the trivial things of this world. He wants us to be so consumed with his will for our life that we no longer fast out of obligation, but out of a desire to grow closer to Him.

So when the world starts to look appealing, get to this place:

"...I’m in the very presence of God

    oh, how refreshing it is!
I’ve made Lord God my home.
God, I’m telling the world what you do!" Psalm 73:28 (MSG)
